The 2019 Charity Partner is.....Spinal Injuries Association

The October Club is delighted to announce that their charity for 2019 is Spinal Injuries Association (SIA).

Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) is the expert voice and leading source of support for spinal cord injured people paralysed following an accident or illness. Every year, 2,500 people sustain a spinal cord injury and their lives are changed forever. However, only one in three get the specialist care essential to leading a fulfilled and independent life. The 1,700 newly injured patients who do not receive specialist care are at risk of serious and life threatening health complications such as pressure sores, urinary tract infections, incontinence and respiratory issues.

In response to this urgent crisis, SIA has piloted a Nurse Specialist project. The project offers an immediate response to spinal cord injured people whose lives and livelihoods are threatened, whilst also enhancing the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in meeting the needs of spinal cord injured patients. The results of the pilot have been remarkable and SIA is experiencing a significant increase in demand for this pioneering service. The October Club’s support will enable SIA to upscale this successful pilot, as well as build the evidence base that will drive lasting changes to policy and practice. As a result, many more spinal cord injured people will get the essential care and support they need to rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential.

Nik Hartley OBE, CEO of Spinal Injures Association said:

"It is terrible to think that people in the UK, paralysed by an accident or medical condition, are then at risk of sub-standard levels of care to the point of risking their lives. This incredible opportunity given to us by The October Club will help us transform this situation for good. Scaling up our Nurse Specialist service will not just be life-saving but give us the chance to train a new generation of care-givers so that we can ultimately impact the whole community of 50,000 people with a spinal cord injury in this country.”

Henry Knapman, Chairman of The October Club said:

“The October Club has a very successful 31 year history of supporting smaller charities and their transformational projects. We have a transparent and rigorous application and selection process and are delighted to announce that, from many initial applications, our 2019 charity will be Spinal Injuries Association. We greatly look forward to working with them to transform the reach and impact of their pilot, supporting 1,000 spinal cord injured people directly per year, educating 1,000 healthcare professionals per year and building the evidence base that will drive lasting changes to policy and practice."

We hope that you will join us in trying to raise as much money as possible for this truly amazing cause.

Notes: For the past 31 years The October Club has been transforming good causes. Each year we identify a UK-based charity with a project, or projects, in several UK regions which could be transformed with our funding. In total the Club has now raised just over £10m and in recent years the average raised per dinner has been £500k, making our event the single biggest of its kind in the sector today.
